KS3 Design and Technology at BSAK
Year 7 & 8
In Year 7 and 8 students spend two lessons per week studying Design and Technology. The Programme is taught on a carousel with all completing modules in Product Design - Resistant Materials, Food Technology and Textiles. The modules last approximately 12 weeks and are taught in specialist rooms and workshops.
Product DesignIn Year 7, the aim is to introduce students to the workshop environment, to some of the tools and processes used in manufacturing in this environment and also to give students an understanding of some of the ways in which ICT can be used to assist designing and making. Students will begin to develop their communication skills graphically and will model their designs using simple materials before moving on to realising their intentions by making good quality, physical products.
Smaller products which students manufacture are quite often packaged using similar processes used in industry. In Year 8, Students build on skills developed in the previous year.
Different materials and manufacturing processes will be introduced which students will use to make a range of high quality products. Taught skills and techniques will often be utilised. An example of this will be the use of ICT and CAD/CAM. Students will be encouraged to use the same software to design elements of their products and build on their knowledge and understanding of its use. |
Food TechnologyIn Year 7, students will learn about the importance of good food hygiene, healthy eating and the ‘eatwell plate’, different roles of ingredients, consumer awareness and safety in the kitchen.
Over the Course of study they will develop, plan and make a range of products such as salads, muffins, pizza and their own healthy ‘5 a day’ dish. The recipes are designed as a platform for further skill based learning in Years 8 and 9. The course should help students to become more independent and able to make informed food choices now and in the future. In Year 8, through the design and make process, students will produce a range of baked products. Different making skills will be used in relation to baking. Students will become familiar with the different function and properties of ingredients and will complete practical baking tasks which will be assessed as part of ‘The Great Abu Dhabi Bake Off’.
Students will then move on to making Multi-Cultural inspired food products suitable for a healthy lifestyle. |
Textiles TechnologyIn Year 7 students learn how fibres are converted into fabrics, the different types of fabrics and their properties and how to use them in design and make activities.
Students are taught to use a sewing machine and correctly set up and use safely in a confident manner. Students work through the design process to design and make small textile objects of their choice, showing their ability to create decorative items. In Year 8, Students learn how to transfer colour to fabrics, experimenting with the many different techniques. They learn how to select the best method to interpret their designs for a practical outcome. Emphasis is on the practical outcome and the ability to evaluate their own work against their original design intentions.

Year 9
Similar to Year 7 and 8 Technology in Year 9 is taught for two lessons. The programme is taught on a carousel of four options comprising Product Design - Resistant Materials, Food Tech, Textiles and a unit in Graphics. The Modules last approximately 9 weeks.
Product DesignIn Year 9, the intention is to allow students to gain an insight into GCSE designing and making practices by following project guidelines loosely based on controlled assessment formats provided by the exam boards in this subject area. Students will be given a limited choice of design briefs and will work on A3 paper, following the design process in the same way as GCSE students. Research, communication skills, modelling and making are all combined as students work through a range of issues, as they design and make products for a specific purpose and Target Market Group. |
Food TechnologyIn Year 9, students through the Design and Make process, will produce different products suitable for a balanced diet experiencing making a range of different main courses.
Students will learn about different environmental and cultural issues related to food production, Healthy eating, food hygiene and safety and the will use a range of equipment. In the second half of the module students will learn to work collaboratively as a team and individually to design for a specific target group/customer through the ‘mini enterprise project’. They will apply their knowledge, skills and understanding of practical tasks to make products for a healthy charity bake sale. |
TextilesIn Year 9, Students will focus on the theme of recycling and sustainability. Students design and make an item for the home which is either recycled or shows elements of sustainable use of materials. They focus on designing a product taking into consideration the limitations of the materials they can source. Students will be encouraged to build on their practical skills developed from Years 7 & 8 and extend knowledge and understanding of the working properties of materials and the skills needed to produce quality outcomes. |
GraphicsGraphics in Year 9 is taught as a discreet module. Students investigate the use of plastics bags and the impact their use has on the environment. The students design a logo or slogan to promote sustainable use of shopping bags. The students then produce a promotional campaign outlining the use of and disposal of the bag. |
