GCSE Design and Technology
Design and Technology is optional at GCSE and at BSAK we offer three choices. GCSE Resistant Materials (WJEC - 4110), GCSE Textiles (WJEC - 4110) and GCSE Food Technology (AQA - 4547). The course of study is for two years and starts in Year 10 with the Controlled Assessment starting in the September of Year 11.
Resistant Materials & TextilesA course in Design and Technology offers a unique opportunity in
the curriculum for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products or systems in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests. Design and Technology develops candidates' interdisciplinary skills, all six Key Skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence. As a fundamental part of their course, candidates should design and make products. They should carry out activities related to industrial practices and the application of systems and control within their designing and making of these products. Students will sit one 2 hour exam paper at the end of the course. This will make up 40% of the total grade. Students will do a Controlled Assignment Task worth 60% of the final grade. They should spend approximately 40 hours on this Assignment, all in Year 11. It consists of a single Design & Make activity. Students must submit a 3D Resistant Materials outcome and a concise design folder. |
Food TechnologyStudents will be able to apply knowledge and understanding of the
working characteristics of food together with processing techniques in order to design and make a food product. Students should, through evaluation of existing food products, apply knowledge of nutrition, functions of ingredients and consumer preferences to identify how existing products/menu ideas are selected to achieve a balanced and varied diet which meets health, dietary, socio-economic and cultural/religious needs of different groups within our society. Students should understand that food products are developed and made safe to eat by combining different ingredients and by using a range of processing methods and equipment. Students will sit one 2 hour exam paper at the end of the course. This will make up 40% of the total grade. Students will do a Controlled Assignment worth 60% of the final grade. They spend approximately 45 hours on this Assignment, mainly in Year 11. It consists of a single Design & Make activity. Students must submit a 3D outcome and concise design folder and/or approximate ICT evidence. They will provide photographic evidence of the finished outcome and the various stages of making. |
