A Level Product Design
Product Design is the process of creating new products intended to be sold commercially. It involves the generation and development of ideas through a design process that lead to new and exciting outcomes which help to solve the myriad of problems encountered in 21st Century society.
The product designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products that other people can use. Their evolving role has been facilitated by digital tools that now allow designers to communicate, visualize, analyse and in some cases manufacture in a way that would have taken greater time and manpower in the past.
A-level Product Design helps students take a broad view of design and technology, develop their capacity to design and make products and appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. It offers a unique opportunity for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests.
Design and Technology develops candidates' interdisciplinary skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and
independence.
The course offers an extensive opportunity to develop communicative capability in a broad range of ways, including written analysis,
sketching and drawing, and the extensive use of ICT and digital media to enhance their design activity. Candidates will similarly have the opportunity to employ a range of materials and media to realise their design concepts. Such making activities may take many forms, ranging from experimental models and prototypes, of a final marketable product.
AS/A level Product Design:
Is intended to be of interest to a wide range of candidates including those intending to directly follow a higher education course or career
in Design and Technology or an associated area.
Those with other interests and aspirations can also benefit from the many transferable skills inherent in the study of Design and Technology.
Builds upon the knowledge, understanding and skills established by the National Curriculum and GCSE, whilst at the same time, accommodating the needs of candidates who have not studied Design and Technology at GCSE level.
Promotes progression through the AS and A level and provides a suitable foundation for the study of Design and Technology, or a related area of study, at further or higher education and / or preparation for future employment and the world of work.
Provides opportunities for candidates to gain a broad understanding of the skills, understanding and knowledge inherent in Design and Technology and to specialise in one focus area.
Encourages candidates to develop their critical thinking, to see the relationships between designer, manufacturer and user and to perceive Design and Technology within the world in which we live.
Provides opportunities to develop their Key Skills, particularly those in problem solving, use of IT and communication. They will also have
opportunities to develop their skills in application of number; working with others and improving own learning and performance.
